HELMS Mobilizes Malaysian-Flagged EGM 209 for Offshore Geophysical Survey in Terengganu

Pasir Gudang, 26 September 2026 – Helms Geomarine Sdn Bhd (HELMS), a wholly Malaysian Bumiputera-owned offshore geotechnical and geophysical survey company, has mobilized the Malaysian-flagged EGM 209 from Tanjung Langsat Port, Johor, for a geophysical survey campaign offshore Terengganu.

The mobilization marks an important step in HELMS’ expansion into offshore geophysical services. It builds on the company’s established geotechnical capabilities and the management and technical experience of its senior team, which has delivered offshore survey projects for multiple oil and gas clients, including PETRONAS, since the early 2000s. Together, these strengths position HELMS to provide more integrated offshore survey solutions.

Built in 2017, the 54-metre EGM 209 accommodates 48 personnel and is equipped with a 2D high-resolution (2DHR) digital and analogue survey spread, together with an A-frame for deploying a drop core sampler. The mobilization brings together the vessel, specialist equipment and survey team required to meet the project’s immediate operational needs.

EGM 209 will support the campaign while Masindra Hawk, HELMS’ next survey vessel, completes Class dry docking and conversion. Also Malaysian-flagged, the 60-metre Masindra Hawk accommodates 48 personnel and provides substantial working deck space. The vessel is being prepared to support 2DHR and analogue surveys, light geotechnical work, and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-supported geophysical site surveys in water depths of up to 6,000 meters.

This development builds on HELMS’ proven offshore geotechnical track record serving operators including PETRONAS, Shell and PTTEP, supported by two DP2 vessels, the Keyfield Helms 1 and Keyfield Itqan. The addition of geophysical survey capability strengthens HELMS’ capacity to support integrated offshore site investigation programs, combining seabed and subsurface data acquisition with its established geotechnical expertise.
